The reading passage proposed three theories regarding the strange sound detected by the Russian submarine. The professor however, does not agree with any of the theories proposeD. She contradicts each of three theories with reasons as follow.
First of all, the passage indicate that the sound was the mating ritual call of the male and female orcas. The professor disprove the theory by stating that the orcas actually lived on the surface of the river, whereas the submarine are in the deep river. So it is unlikely that the orcas could be detected by the submarine even if the submarine is near, and thus the first theory in the passage does not stand.
The second theory of the passage stated that the sound could be made by giant squid. The professor consider this idea false as the sound disappeared after the 1980s,but the giant squid has always been there, so the second theory is erroneous.
The third theory in the passage thought that the sound detected was the stray sound from military technology. The professor thinks that this theory is ridiculous, for the sound move around with agility and change direction in a fast pace, which is not a trite of foreign submarine or other military technology. Also, the professor said that military technology can emit a specific kind of engine sound, which is not detected. In this way, the third theory does not stand.
According to the three reasons above, the professor considers the three theories erroneous.
