MonaParsons was born in Nova Scotia in 1901. When she was 36, her brother introduced her to millionaire Dutchbusinessman. The couple married and settled in the Netherlands in 1937.
WorldWar II broke out in September 1939. In May 1940, Holland was invaded by Germany. Parsons and her husband joined aresistance group. They sheltered downed Allied airmen. They hide them in their mansion.Unfortunately, an informer reported them to the Gestapo and Parsons wasarrested in September 1941. Shewas found guilty of treason and given a death sentence. The judge allowedher to appeal. Finally, she was changed her sentence tolife in prison. She was held in Germany.
In March 1945, the prison was bombed, Parsons escapedwith a young Dutch lady. The two disguised themselves as sisters. They walkedfor three weeks, covering 125 kilometers. Eventually, Parsons reachedsafety of the Allied lines.
Parsonsnever wore a military uniform, but she was willing to lay her life on the linefor freedom. She was truly a woman of dignity and courage.
