Strengthen Our Wills
Recently, I have read the famous novelwritten by the famous American novelist Ernest Hemingway called The Old Man andthe Sea.
Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 and diedin 1961. He won the NobelPrize in1954. Hemingway was a well-known novelist and he has the reputation ofadventuring spirit. Moreover, he made a great impact on the novel of America.
This novel tells us a story about an oldfisherman called Santiagowho caught a big marlin fish alone.
Santiago was an old fisherman who fished alone in askiff in the Gulf Stream and he had goneeight-four days without taking a fish. If I were him, I will give up fishingand do something else. However, he didn’t lose his heart. He loves the sea; heloves his career of fishing, so he continued launching out. Fortunately, he gota big marlin fish after a long fight with it. But good time didn’t last long;two sharks contested the marlin fish with him. Santiagofought with them valiantly. Althoughhe only got fish bone at last, he received respect from others.
After reading this work, I was shocked bythe strong will Santiagohas. He set an example for us that we must work hard to achieve our goals.
Gone are the days when we do our best torealize our dreams. When we were young, we had dreamt of becoming doctors, teachers, scientists and so on. However, while we growing up, we may forget ouroriginal dreams gradually. Chances are that we learnt how to escape problems wemeet and how to compromise. Our wills become weaker and weaker, so that once wemeet with difficulties in our study or work; we may give up rather thanovercome them.
No one can get somewhere without a strongwill. On one hand, some people determine to gain success. They work hard, studyhard and pay attention to details. When they encounter problems, they spare no effort to find the best way that cansolve them. Step by step, they become closer and closer to success and finally, they make their dreams come true.
However, on the other hand, some peoplealso set their goals and want to achieve them. They may work hard at first, butbecause their wills are not strong enough, so they cannot overcomedifficulties. Gradually, they lose confidence that can bring them strength togo on their work. As a result, they will never taste the fruit of success. What’sa pity!
So, as far as I am concerned, it isnecessary for us to strengthen our wills. But how can we gain this goal? Personally,I think there are at least three things we can do. Firstly, work hard to gainmore abilities because abilities are the base of dealing with problems. Secondly, trust yourself and become confident. It is confidence that can bring us powerto fight with difficulties. Last but not least, develop the habit of independence;it can help you solve problems yourself.
Altogether, a strong will is very importantfor everyone. Only have strong wills can we gain success much faster!
