I train half the year at the Justine Henin Tennis Academy in Belgium. I have contact with Justine herself and I work with my coach there too. I’ve never hit with Justine, but I have some contact with her and she shares stories about her career and her experiences.

For the other 50 per cent of the year, I’m based in Moscow. I have school in Moscow, and we also go back there so I can work with my fitness coach, a former professional in athletics, who I have worked with since the beginning of my career.

We do running, intervals, speed training and fast legs – so that you have light legs on the court. We’ve done those sort of things since the beginning when I started with her… I don’t know how many years ago! I like tournaments a lot more than practice, but fitness is the most important part of it all.

I first took up tennis after seeing my brother play. I watched him while he was playing, took the racket and tried to play like he did. At first I was just hitting with my brother, then I went to the school in Luzhniki in Moscow, where I started playing properly. I know all the coaches and I play regularly there when I’m in Moscow.

I don’t really have one standout strength on court – I don’t even know my best shot! I just enjoy looking where I need to hit the ball in certain moments but I don’t really have one best stroke.

The person I look up to most in tennis is Maria [Sharapova]. I like her style of game and I like her style on the court. I’ve looked up to her since I was just beginning to play tennis. I’m really in love with her game, her style, the way she is off the court.
