The former poster boy for rock is currently enjoying a second wave in popularity as an actor. Meet singer and actor Shin Sung-woo.
We met Shin at Incheon International Airport, where he was surrounded by female admirers. It was a scene reminiscent of his high days as a rocker in the early 1990s.
Music remains his first love, but Shin Sung-woo is currently experimenting with a new passion – acting. He appeared in a one-act drama initially and not too long thereafter, was promptly cast as the main character in a TV series. Shin has also tackled a variety of roles in melodramas and comedies.
Before the TV dramas, Shin Sung-woo received his initiation into acting, through the musical. ‘Dracula’ provided him with the chance to learn how to move his body and deliver lines, and win over audiences with more than just music.
Shin made his singing debut in 1992. The hit song ‘For Tomorrow,’ along with his then radical look and model-like appearance, quickly established him as a major star.
For over a decade, Shin continued to make the same type of rock music with considerable success. Therefore, his foray into acting, came as a surprise to many. He explains the reason for the move.
Musician, actor and sculptor – are all words that describe this multi-talented performer. However, he is quick to say that the one title he will never be able to give up is musician. For him, music is more than just a job, it’s a life long addiction.
If music equals life for Shin, then acting represents a challenge. A challenge that will allow him to grow as an artist and show new sides of himself to audiences.
Shin Sung-woo was once dubbed ‘Terry’ for resembling the rebellious character in the comic ‘Candy Candy.’ We asked him to predict what he’d be doing, 10 years later.
A performer constantly on the lookout for challenges – that was Shin Sung-woo.
