Sally Hawkins talks on Maudie (2016): I think what attracted me to the role of Maud was- everything about her. I first was sent a picture of Maud by Aisling- from Aisling, she just sent me a picture when she was- an iconic picture when she was by a window, about 65 years old. And this woman, these hands, incredible hands and surrounded by her art work. I don't really need to even read the script! The more I learnt, the more I sort of- discovered about her... Just, yeah, you would be an idiot not to play this part! Aisling is a real great friend. She's a great, such a master filmmaker. Shes an artist. And, I've been, we've been wanting to work together again since we did Fingersmith years ago. She's an artist. Everything she's attacted to, I'd - Yeah, sign up, like that. She cares to the core of her being, about what shes making. And you know that you can trust her. She'll trust you. She hands it over to you and she knows, you know that she will, is going to step out of your way, in order for you to breathe. So many directors don't do that and don't let you play. I mean Ethan and I had this incredible ability to just play and freedom to do what we do, that's a real gift. You just want to do as much as you can when you've got a partner like Ethan- Ah!- who's heaven-sent indeed. I mean, nobody else could play Everett. You just want to be, you can only be as good as the people you're with. So, I mean, I'm a very lucky lady. The fact that you had no insulation, they lived in that tiny house... The winters that you have here... How she dealt with that. And yet, this incredible spirit, this fighting spirit, because of that, you... I mean it's life-affirming. Maud can do what she did at that time with her di****lities against all odds. We can do anything.
